The nature of the shelves influences the sound.
Glass tends to give a harder edge to the sound than acrylic.
This may be a bad thing.
I like 15mm acrylic. Its thick enough to be reasonably rigid and doesn't really resonate.
This gives a drier kind of sound. Cleaner and leaner.
It also looks very good.

I can't comment on the comparison since I've n ever tried glass but I'm using acrylic in a different setup and find it very effective. It's softer than glass and I think it would damp vibration better.I just noticed this link in July's Stereophile and took a look. It shows acrylic shelves in an interesting design using carbon fibre frames. Interesting plots of the effectiveness of the design over standard. lead filled racks and an air suspension system.
