Hi,I have the same pre and the same cap was bulging and I replaced it . I believe it is in the heater supply circuit. There is one above and on below the board.
I put in some German Frako's of very high quality in the position. I also purchased all the electrolytics needed to replace the B+ and everything else from Allied Electronics. I specified Sprague Atoms as this is the brand mostly used in the unit and the form factor fits.
I've not done the work but I don't use the pre anymore it's shelved and I don't have the heart to get rid of it...it's a great piece. I bought my originally in 1982...so yeah at 25yrs its time for some work.
I doubt all the caps would cost you more than 25-$30 and they are relatively easy to replace..
Good Luck
Follow Ups:
I bought my SP8 a few years back and I changed the power supply caps before I put it in service. I remember there are two big caps on the top, and if you open the bottom cover you will see there are two more smaller caps. I contact Jim McShane and bought the caps from him. It was very easy to replace and the SP8 has been in service ever since.
I just ordered some replacement caps from ARC for $5.40 each. Not bad. I'm just curious what ARC had to offer for replacement...most likely Nichicons. I kept and gutted the original caps and may stuff it later, just to kept the orignal look. It's interesting to find that all the caps in the preamp had a 4 digit code in which the first 2 digits appears the be the year it was made. On my unit all the caps had 86 or 87 for the first 2 digits, which corresponds to the year that the preamp was made purchased in 1987.The B+ caps on this rev.7 is Sprague 53D and I think that is available through Mouser. I'm not replacing those yet but seriously thinking about it. Debating if I should get the Nichicon from ARC or the new Sprague 53d. Are the current Sprague caps good quality? Are they still made in the USA?
Hello,I don't think I've seen any Nichichon caps in an ARC product...but maybe some of the late model pieces with radial caps might have them.
Sprague is now part of the Vishay group..not sure if the atoms are still made in the USA. Although atoms are very high quality for the axial type and they're drop in replacement which make sense for resale value.
I pretty sure the Nichicons are used. Here is a REF3 that has both radial and axial. The cap in the first pic next the PS tube is axial and it looks like a Nichicon.
