Hello,I just bought a Cayin/Spark HA-1A Headphone amplifier. It comes with 12ax7, 12au7 and 2x 6p14p tubes(EL84 subs I think). A very good and versatile amp imho.
I tried changing the 6p14p tubes with some NOS EL84s. On some of the tubes I am getting channel imbalance ie. one channel is louder than the other. I changed the position of the tubes, and the imbalance is reversed. I assume the tubes are the problem.
Can I solve this problem without throwing away the NOS tubes? Is this the reason why you need to get matched pairs of power tubes?
Thanks beforehand for the help.
Cheers
Follow Ups:
...with an amp I built for a friend....was soooo careful to match every resistor perfectly and got a noticeable imbalance which I traced to my pair of new EH 12AX7's. Once I put in an older pair of Telefunkens of unknown vintage the issue went away.I'm building a headphone amp for myself and THIS time....I am putting in a balance control among other things.
Any you do not need to "throw away" the NOS EL84, just ebay them. I would also question if both are really NOS if the imbalance is really that bad.At one time there was this special circuit called a "balance control" that used to solve these sorts of problems. Though how to use such a control have been lost to the ages.
