Hello
I read somewhere that using SS preamp and tube amp would expose the
worst in both SS & tube. Hybrids are usually tube preamp and SS amp.
However, I heard some success stories here about Creek OBH10/12 passive
preamp with different types of tube amps here. Any inputs? Thanks.
FWIW, I once heard a system that consisted of...
Krell KPS-25 as a preamp (SS)
Accuphase CP-65? cd player (SS)
CARY CAD-845 amp (single ended triode amp)
B&W 802 series 80 speakers
This was one of the best sounding systems I had ever heard!
Hi,
Definitly a no-no with almost ANY SS Pre....
Passive Volume-controls plus Inputswitches work well with everything having a high Input Impedance (as long as the Interconnect Capacitance is low).
If there is enough to go passive, certainly do so....

Well at least you've put "almost" there..... if you have chance try using the Burmester 808 Mk.V pre on ANY tube amp and you'll know why.....
Too bad the Burmmie is 25K+ :-(
Happy listening!
Hi there,
While still living in Berlin, I had a friend who worked fro Mr. Burmester.... I'm pretty intimiatly familiar with his designs as they where 8 Years ago.
UNLESS he has really doe something drastic, I'd care to demure and continue to use my Toccata Preamp (all valve)....

Hi Thorsten,
I do agree with you as even I'm lucky enough to own the 808 Mk.V, I would still have a tube reference preamp with me as there's simply no subsitiute for good tube gears!
For your info I've just ordered the new Hovland HP-100 all-tubed preamp... in my all-tube system (including the DAC!) Cheers!
Happy listing and growing (the tube, not you!) :-)
How high of the input impedance of an amp should be to
couple well with this creek passive vol-control? 10K, 15K, 20K?
I've used the Creek OBH12 with a Goldmund SRA that had a input impedance of 10k and had mixed results, mostly when I had a reel-to- reel tape deck hooked up to the Creek also. Seems when I used amps that had 20k or higher I had no problems. The higher the input impedance, the more stable the system seemed to sound to me.
Good luck.
10K is pretty low. If memory serves me, not many amps have that low an input impedance- Ayre and Pass come to mind. Other than that most amps are higher-especially tubed amps, which tend to be high.
Jack
Goldmunds and Spectrals are mostly 10K also. Too bad because I like these amps alot. But Jack is right in that 10K is very low.
Didn't know that. Its clear they were not meant for passives, ot most tubed pres. Ironically, before the high-techization of audio, people never had these problems, equipement interactions were a lot more uniform(input impedance, voltage required to reach max output etc.).
Enjoy,
Jack
