This is the second time I've posted here asking for help, and y'all were such big help the first time I figured I'd try it again.
I know next to nothing about audio gear, but do love the way it sounds. I need some new tubes for my Audible Illusions preamp and was wondering what a good, reputable source for tubes is.
Thanks, again, in advance.
There are lots of places online where you can find tubes if you know what you are looking for. Prices varies from one place to another. You can also find local electronic stores that might still have some in stock. I've paid from $1 to $45 for the same tube.If you don't know anything about tubes, Kevin is a great guy for information and recommendation. His price is on the high side, but the service and knowledge is first rate. That's what you are paying for. And you can't go wrong there. However, JoeS has posted some excellent information regarding preamp tubes in the FAQ section. If you are a little adventurous, you might want to look around and do some experiment with variuous tubes. I've found several places that carries some of the tubes recommended by JoeS for the Audible Illusion preamps for reasonable prices. Unfortunately, I don't have that information in my head. So e-mail me and I will send you the sites from home. (I wish there's a section in the Asylum where we can list these dealers because this question keeps on coming up!)
This is the only place that I've found the 6H23n-EB that JoeS talked about in his article for the Audible Illusions. (In case the link doesn't work....http://biznet.maximizer.com/9605/index.html)
There are several types of this tube. Basically they are earlier versions of the present day Sovtek, and many people like them better. Art Ferris, the owner of the company Audible Illusions, called me after a customer had sent some that he bought from us with his preamp that he was getting upgraded."Where did you get these" he asked...but we don't find qty enough of them for his manufacturing. 50 here or 100 there. I just received some of the earliest ones ever seen here. We have four variations now.
FWIW, Audible Illusions sends all their tube business to us. It's amazing how many people own that preamp. We do one or two a day of Mod 3's or L-1's.
Did Art ever get you one of the 7DJ8s that I sent
him and he was going to pass along to you? As I
understood him, it measured quite well and he was
smitten by the sound.

Kevin Deal @ www.upscaleaudio.com is your best bet. When I had the Modulus 3a, he sold me some Mullard CV2493s that sounded gorgeous in that preamp. I think he also recommends the Tungsrams too.Oz
