Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
68.33.198.162
Hello, I'm new to the Group, but have found so much useful information. I have had my 1.6's for 5 years and I'm a tweaker also. I have a question...I switched to biamping about 6 months ago and have enjoyed the new configuration. However, I think I enjoyed it a bit too loud. Now I get a distortion sound with moderate volume, especially when there is a bass drum or guitar. It only comes from my left Magneplanar. I'm not sure if a wire is loose or I damaged the mylar??? Any suggestions before I call Magnepan? Thanks,
Follow Ups:
It is definitely the left speaker only. It sounds like a woofer that is blow or torn. I'm going to look to see if it is a wire, but nobody has bumped into them or touched them. I think that is was too loud. Are there any posts about a filter for rolling off the bottom end so bass is not such an issue with the 1.6?
Thanks,
Just my 2 cent:
I hope, that it's only a loose wire, since you can repair that yourself easier than a broken mylar (possible too, though). Could be an issue also about the mylar "slapping" to some part of the "housing" as well - did you recently stumble against it?If you don't want to take off the socks (go to the tweaks-section and look up Ed Hsu's post about XO-upgrades) try two things:
Take very bright light (sun is best, or a bright flashlight) and let it shine on the 1.6 from the side. That way, you can inspect the mylar at least for major damages.
Next thing I would do: try to get a CD or LP with test-tones (315Hz is a very common frequency on those records and below the crossover-frequency). If you are able to, play it as loud as you need it to hear the distortion. Go close to the 1.6 and "scan" it with your ears from top to bottom and left to right - maybe you can find the place, where the distortion originates. If you can't hear it with the bass, then try a 1000Hz-Tone, which is above crossover-frequency.
Be careful not to play the tones at a too high volume, though....
Good advice. One real quick check I might suggest since you didn't really describe the distortion in much detail is to completely eliminate the possibility of anything upstream by switching the speaker cables at the speakers from left to right. If the distortion stays in the left speaker it's for sure the left speaker, then a call to Magnapan would probably be in your best interest. They probably have some quick tests to help isolate the problem. Good luck. Jim
