That's awesome. Did you use a press to glue the layers of MDF together?I wish I knew my way around a lathe better. I'd give it a shot. I have some Sierra Brooks horns but they didn't turn out too good.
If you do another one, could you take some pics of like... the initial mockup of the MDF and how you started the cut and so forth?
Thanks
Charlie

> Did you use a press to glue the layers of MDF together?I cut square pieces MDF with a size of approx. 175mm. I drilled a 20mm hole in the middle of each and stacked them on a tube of same diameter. Clamped with eight screw clamps I glued them together with white (?yellow) glue. I pre-cut a cylinder of 165mm dia. out of the block since this is the max. diameter my lathe can handle. I used a piece of tube welded to a piece of sheet metal (5mm thick) as a flange where I simply screwed the MDF cylinder with 4 wood screws (take a close look to the pics on my HP). So I'm able to clamp this into the lining of my lathe.
The flare guide was made from 2mm sheet metal (printed the tractrix flare on paper and transfered/cut them on/out of the sheet metal).
With this guide it's nearely inpossible to turn a 'wrong' flare since it will keep you from cutting too 'deep' into the MDF.
In regards to the roughness of your horns: May be solid wood will behave different (i.e. giving more rough surface) - I don't know - could imagine it depends on the direction of the wood's grain.
I also don't know wether or not MDF has got some drawbacks compared to solid wood like maple or brich. Any thaughts on this?> If you do another one, could you take some pics of like... the
> initial mockup of the MDF and how you started the cut and so forth? For now I'vot two of them finised, with one having the driver attached. So it may take a while. There is a chance that a friend of mine will buy a big lathe being able to turn 350Hz horns. In this case I'll report on my attemps to turn larger horns from MDF.
Thanks for the interest.

Thanks for the info. If I can find someone with a lathe that'll do it, I might give some a shot.I know Bruce uses a hardwood for his horns, but why he does exactly, I don't know. Did you put a finish or anything on the MDF?
As for my horns, they were just cut poorly. The throat is out of round. How one accomplishes that on a lathe... I'm not exactly sure. Victor said that the place that finishes & sands it was responsible for that. But that doesn't account for the difference at the mouth, and the funny 'bump' in the middle of the horn (again, unless it was not meant to be a true tractrix horn). Based on your tractrix calculator, for a 1" driver, and 500hz horn, the mouth should be 21.6cm across... well, on mine, one is 30.3cm and the other is about 31cm across. So whatever it is, it's not a tractrix.Charlie

The cut is rough at the throat. The curve isn't perfect, there's a 'bump' about halfway back. This could be because it is a modification of the tractrix curve, iirc. Also, the cut isn't accurate in that one horn is about 1/4" larger in diameter at the mouth. And I paid $500 for this. :( Oh well, live and learn. I'll mount some Radian 475's on them and bring them down for Kevin's meeting, see if Mark can measure them. If they measure good and sound ok, I'll keep 'em for awhile. If they don't measure so good, they'll turn into planters and I'll make some of these MDF horns.

One of my friends got a pair with a 1" adapter, and your decription applies very well to what I saw.
I might add that the adapters had a very bad integration with the rest of the horn and constituted a small chamber between the driver and the horn.
The whole thing looked and measured as crap, with some serious frequency anomalities.
To ask 500USD for things like this is outrageous.
outrageous audiophile crap! That is all that is.try dds, they have a 1"......I think Radian does as well. Forget glammy audiophile junk
nt
He sold them to a guy who uses the without the adapters.
Pretty straightforward. Especially when you consider a pair from Bruce is $100 less... Although they don't look as nice, I guess.I'm trying to figure out what sort of flare this is now. I really have no idea. I guess I'll find out how it measures eventually. Might provide some clues.
Part of me wants to hold off buying the Radian 475's to drop in there, since I'll most likely end up with different horns eventually, anyways. Maybe build some like Volvotreter's. Not like I could do much worse of a job.
I hope I can borrow a friend's digital camera soon and post some pics.

You should have gotten the refund when it was offered to you Charlie. When I offered the refund (I actually recommended it to you for your horns due to the description you made)to you you passed on it. If you'd like for me to email Victor again I will.
Magnetar
You're right, I should have demanded a refund immediately for these. My recollection of our conversations on the phone is sketchy, so I can't say for sure. I got them on 2/28... After talking with you and victor a bit, I figured I might try fixing them, but then I know on 3/21 you told me I should get a refund based on my description. My fault that I waited until 4/1 then to ask Victor for a refund. Couldn't get a refund then, and he told me then that he'd moved overseas, and I'd have to pay shipping ($180) each way if I wanted a different pair.
If you want to contact him again, that's fine. I doubt anything's changed.
Charlie
ps: Sorry for hijacking your thread, Volvotreter
Three months ago you didn't have to "demand" a refund Charlie. It was offered to you first hand along with another choice of a partial allowance. I'll email Victor to see if he'll take them back. He has moved, so they'll need shipped to the other side of the world.

...all of my problems with Sierra Brooks are my own fault. Bad judgement on my part, thinking I could repair the horns. I should have gotten a refund immediately. I'm not really being sarcastic here either. My failure to get a refund is my fault. After Victor said, point blank, I could not get a refund and would have to pay $360 shipping to get a new pair (assuming they were perfect), I pretty much gave up on it. It was not my intention to dredge this up.
When I said I got burned, I meant it more in line with what balint said: "To ask 500USD for things like this is outrageous." If I try to use them, with the amount of work they need they are worth nowhere near $500, at least not to me. Even if I do end up with a refund, it's still a collosal waste of time and money (for shipping).
