There are some high end cables that are all silver, say that they are solid fine silver and some say that they are zero crystal silver. Is one really superior to the other. What experiences have you guys have had?
Follow Ups:
Zero Crystal silver is impossible IMEO. Single-crystal silver is possible, but unrealizable. It is possible to get low crystal counts in metal conductors, but just as soon as you bend the conductor, the crystals form and fracture.I have found that very pure materials with regular crystal organization do sound better than fractured crystal or low-purity materials. They also measure better in terms of reflections at ultra-high frequencies, for whatever good that does...
Acoustic Zen appears to be the only outfit offering "zero crystal" 7n silver. I wonder how they manufacture it or where they get it as no one else seems to be offering such a beast? Maybe it's simply an innocently named brand, any resemblance to actual silver classification standards is coincidental of course and was never an attempt to mislead consumers.
I generally don't like criticizing competitors, but here is what I found:I spoke with the commodities exchange that handles the bulk of the silver traded in the world. They told me that the smelters that do most of the silver (from Mexico) cannot possibly get 7 9's purity. In an attempt to do this, the metal just crystallizes and flakes. Impossible to cast or draw it. Even 6 nines is very difficult to control. Only 5 nines is even possible as a wire according to them.
That's consistent with what I read about a year ago but thought maybe there had been some recent manufacturing advances to obtain 7n silver for wire purposes. I've emailed them, should be interesting.
