Neutrik (gold-plated) and Switchcraft (silver, then gold-plated) arte the best XLR plugs/connectors.Use one of the commercial twisted pairs as outlined in my DIY note, OR use a homemade twisated pair.
Most true balanced connections don't need a gorund connect, but for those that do, a 16 gauge stranded tinned coipper wire on the out side of either a commecial twisted pair, OR on the outside of a homemade twisted pair will fill the need from pin 1 to pin 1)
The other connections are: one of the twisted pairs for connecting pin 2 to pin 2, and the other for pin 3 to pin 3. Outer briad connected to the shell ground at the ssource only,, and the pin 1 to pin 1 wire (if needed) outside of this.

John,Thank you. I'll probably try to make a set of balanced cables with your latest DIY recipe in a few weeks and post results here.
If I understand what you are saying, the method for balanced cables is basically like that for RCA/unbalanced and I probably don't need a shield with balanced interconnects. I can pretty much leave pin 1 alone on both ends and just use the regular-recipe twisted pair unless I run into problems with noise, yes?
Assuming a shielded interconnect, the rule of connecting to the source end is the same as with RCA's.
Did I get the message correct?

Mostly.I would still use a shield over the twisted pair, just spaced away from them. True balanced operation is affected less by the shield copmpared to single ended.
What I was trying to convey was that three wires are often not needed, and if the 3rd wire is needed due to minute differences in chassis potentials that need equalizing, then a third wire outside the shield, away from the twisited pair will do nicely, and avoid contaminating the pair with any ground currents/noises.
