I have an Anthem preamp with adjustable gain . Today I noticed the right channel was quite weaker. Changing tubes did help. I fixed the problem by setting the gain at 8 on the right channel , they sound equal now. The left remains set at 24 , previously they were both set at 24. My question is...is something inherently wrong to have to adjust them at different settings ?
Follow Ups:
Without knowing the schematic of the preamp, it is hard to say. You have isolate it is the preamp, we can go further to isolate which stage. Set the gain back to equal on both channel. Connect from the tape out of the preamp to another preamp. Since tape-out does not go through volumne control and line stage, we can further isolate stage further. If that is good, it must be the volume control or the line-stage. You can measure the tracking between the two channels of the volume control to see they give you the same resistance at different setting or not. Some volume control can be up to 20% tolerance level.
Did you check your amp? If not try switching the I/C's at the amp and see if the channel with reduced gain switches speakers.
yes I did switch IC's and the channel with reduced gain switched speakers. I also tried a different preamp and the gain was equal in both channels with the different preamp.
another dumb question first. Have you max'ed out the gain switches for both channels so that you are, in essence getting the max gain from the source? It is possible that one of the attenuators is failing. If not that I would assume it is the volume control. Probably time to visit a techie.
no, I haven't maxed out the gain switches but I'll give it a try. Is that the way they are supposed to be set ? thanks
It probably will not help to figure out your problem - I guess I was just thinking the problem could be in the attenuators as apposed to the main volume control and that running them at max might give you some information. It really can't unless you can take the attenuators out of the loop, as with a bypass switch if your unit has one. I'm not an expert on Anthem, but usually input attenuators give you the ability to reduce the gain of the source so you can use the pre-amps VC effectively and/or if your unit has attenuators on each input to match all of the incoming sources to one level of your choosing, or if you have inputs which are not effected by attenuators you can uses the attenuators on the effected input to match the input with out attenuators. Sorry I couldn't have been of more help.
oops...I meant to say " changing tubes did not help "
