If one channel is louder than the other.. What does that mean?

Hello,

I just bought a Cayin/Spark HA-1A Headphone amplifier. It comes with 12ax7, 12au7 and 2x 6p14p tubes(EL84 subs I think). A very good and versatile amp imho.

I tried changing the 6p14p tubes with some NOS EL84s. On some of the tubes I am getting channel imbalance ie. one channel is louder than the other. I changed the position of the tubes, and the imbalance is reversed. I assume the tubes are the problem.

Can I solve this problem without throwing away the NOS tubes? Is this the reason why you need to get matched pairs of power tubes?

Thanks beforehand for the help.

Cheers
