Neutrik (gold-plated) and Switchcraft (silver, then gold-plated) arte the best XLR plugs/connectors.

Use one of the commercial twisted pairs as outlined in my DIY note, OR use a homemade twisated pair.

Most true balanced connections don't need a gorund connect, but for those that do, a 16 gauge stranded tinned coipper wire on the out side of either a commecial twisted pair, OR on the outside of a homemade twisted pair will fill the need from pin 1 to pin 1)

The other connections are: one of the twisted pairs for connecting pin 2 to pin 2, and the other for pin 3 to pin 3. Outer briad connected to the shell ground at the ssource only,, and the pin 1 to pin 1 wire (if needed) outside of this.
