Well I went out and took the plunge. After many years with
a Dual CS 5000 and a Blue Point Special cart I bought the
Basis 1400.

It came with the Rega 250 arm and I had a Grado Green put on till
I decide on one I will live with for a while. What I noticed first
was the detail, the detail that had been missing from my old setup.
Listening to "Count Basie and his Kansas City 7"(Impluse) I was amazed
at how forward the soundstage came from that of the Dual. Everything
right up front without being in my face. Thad Jones and his trumpet
are cleaner and more focused then I have ever heard and Basie just
shines.
Listening to Peggy Lee "Mink Jazz" (Capitol) brought out an emotional
edge that I had only had of a hint of on the Dual. Both "The Lady is a
Tramp" and "Days of Wine and Roses" were superb and warm, able to tranpost
me into the music.
Along with the forwardness of the 1400 I notice on some cuts a brightness
that is a bit off putting. but I'll reserve final judgement till I get
the Dynavector cart (or another ) in to the 1400 and broke in. I'm also
adding the Audio Electronic's PH-1 Phono Preamp as soon as the kit gets
here and I suspect it will be a change from the Pass 4.
One last thing on "Court and Spark"(Asylum) I heard things I never knew
were on this record it was great. On "Ella in Berlin"(Verve) When she
does Mack the Knife besides the smile I always get from how she manages
to continue to sing without knowing the words, I found a presence and
a richness that led me to play it over 3 times in a row.. what more
could I want.
