for the T-1000

I came across this magnificent tuner while perusing Ebay. The price was right ($99) so I grabbed it.
Eumig an Austrian company, is best known for their home-movie projectors.
They had reasonable success with stereo-sound projectors in the early seventies and decided to expand their electronics division. The “cost is no object” 1000 Series was born.

In 1979 their FL 1000 pro-sumer cassette deck won the Award for Design and Engineering at the Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago. Although this deck was made in Austria, the other components in the Eumig 1000 Series were superbly manufactured in Japan, for Eumig.

A week later, the Eumig tuner arrived at my house (in mint-like condition) and it played nicely , for about an hour or so. Then, the audio output starts modulating like someone was screwing with the volume control. Eventually the modulating music becomes modulating “beeps” and then nothing. Ebay = buyer beware. Nuff said?

So I started looking around for a competent audiophile repair-tech.
Tuner Information Center.com recommended the StereoSurgeons of Connecticut, among others, in their repairs section. I chose ‘Surgeons’ mainly because their location was good for me for shipping, and they didn’t charge a mortgage proportioned deposit.

They fixed it in a couple of days and gave me a call when it was ready. I spoke with Ken Bernacky, the company president and very cool guy. He explained that the Eumig was a well made instrument that would benefit significantly from being spec’d and tweaked,
if I was interested in that sort of thing.
I said “hell-yeah dude, gimme the ‘fully’!” That’s tech-talk.
The Eumig got alignment/work and completely re-capped with BlackGates( awesome)

Two weeks later I get the Eumig back and it sounds friggin extraordinary!
I mean the sound of this unit is so pure and musical, immediate and bold. Wait a minute, did I just say “bold”? yeah I guess I did.
My previous tuner, the classic Pioneer F9, a stellar performer in its own right, placed the music adjacent to and behind the L+R sides of the speakers. (and it was good)
The Eumig sound encompasses and extends these aural zones and adds more dimension to the stereo image. Music is discharged from the loudspeaker baffle with an almost life-like dynamic quality. Also, high frequencies appear more delicate and detailed and more present. There’s been a significant increase in bass energy too. At times this tuner sounds almost as good as any other source component in my system. I actually listen to radio more than any of my other sources (I always have) So I’m good.
Satellite radio and hi-def radio( IBOC technology) exist ubiquitously these days, so good ole’ fm stereo is not long for this world. I expect it will be the personal domain of pirate and college stations in the near future. For now, there are numerous contenders for the airwaves in South-East Brooklyn (Canarsie). I think WBGO (jazz) out of New Jersey is wonderful. WFMU and WFUV( college and free-form radio) are at times disturbing, but always entertaining.

Here are the pre and post alignment measurements:
