Years ago I owned a Revox A77 High Speed Two track version - it actually came in two track and four track as well as "low speed" and "high speed", the high speed meaning 7.5 and 15 ips. Mine sounded absollutely great when it worked, but ate tape in a big way. As I recall, the machine had all direct drive and the motors were actuated by gold contact relays. My relays on several occasions developed timing and contact probelms which then chewed up the tape (when one or both reel motors and the tape releases did not function at the right times. The fidelity was unbelievable. Of course, so was the cost of tape as the lower speed and half track still was a lot of tape per minute.
The build quality of the machine was fantastic. Just a note of caution for those considering purchase. I would suggest careful watch on the relays and perhaps going for the more commonly available 1/4 track normal speed version.
