After years of stealing the well thought out, researched and tested designs of everyone else, I stumbled into making my own, totally seat-of-the-pants model, more or less by accident.

Years ago, one of my major influences, well-known (on the Lansing Heritage Board) belligerent JBL Advocate, Spkrman57 ...

...gave me a pair of cheap-ass 12 inchers Altec made for someone else in the 70's. They went into a pair of O&B cabinets with some inexpensive Vifa tweeters and did garage/computer duty.

Recently, I got a hankerin', as we say here in Transylvania County, for the sound of Dynamic tweeters as a change of pace from years of being exclusively a horn guy. The other great speaker-building influence in my life, Wayne Parham...

...(Jeez, I wish I looked like that behind the wheel of a 4-4-2 !) always had a tower model (2Pi) with that same Vifa 25 tweeter but I wanted to hear something more up-market. John Krutke of Zaph Audio was touting the SB29 from newly formed S-B Acoustics and his testing and touting made sense to me so I plunged $110 bucks, bought a pair and installed them in the O&B Cabinets with the nondescript Altec somethingorothers.

KARMA!!!

Where my 4Pi B&C DE-250/Eminence H-290 horn combo emits super-low distortion truth in a 2 1/2 dimensional soundstage, the SB-29 just glows with tonal color and texture that's probably larger-than-life but absolutely glorious!

The stamped-frame, 'where's the magnet?' Altecs go beyond the incredibly clean bass of the JBL 2226s to where it was described as "bungee cord bass" by Spkrman but going without a port tames that.

The way Dizzie Gillespie often makes sounds, not music, becomes musical; Eva Cassiday and Alison Krauss never sounded better and the Tchaikovsky "Little Russian" got a lot "bigger".

The 2 1/4 cubic foot, floor-standing Walnut cabinets look good in a living room, I think,

and were great fun to build. Throwing drivers together, even in an adaptation of known designs is kinda haphazard, even stoopid, but Oh Brother did it ever work out here!

Ya don't have to have a fancy workshop

or a ton of fancy tools (I didn't but could've done all the routing with just this P-C 690)

The box is MDF, the ultra flexible but tuff veneer is NBL from Tape-Ease and ya don't hafta round over the corners or rebate the drivers. The finish is just Watco Linseed Oil straight from the can followed by some Bulls-Eye Amber Shellac which is rubbed out with a 3M Fine pad dipped in paste wax.

Product Weakness: There's lots of ways to f-ck-up getting there
Product Strengths: Ya get to say %22I built these myself%22
