So what's a $80 speaker review doing in Audio Asylum? Well, let's make the point clear and straightforward: this is not by any means a high-end speaker, nor would I call it hi-fi, but for $80 MSRP (about $50 in stores) what you get is a multimedia speaker (for your PC, portable music or video games) that gives you much bang for the buck that IMHO it deserves a place in Audio Asylum.

I was shopping around for a PC speaker system. There were a few good offerings from high-end companies in this market segment, albeit at a hefty price, but since I already have a MartinLogan system for hi-fi, I promised myself that I would only spend $50 tops for a PC speaker set.

In the $50 sub/sat combo category, there were contenders from Altec Lansing, Logitech, Creative, and of course the TDK. Not to say that there were no others, but I'm not that fond of buying PC speakers, you know.

Of all those mentioned, it was obvious to me that the ultra-flat TDK has the most high-tech appeal, but what came to me as a surprise was that the TDK system actually stood out sonically. It had superior treble and midrange openness, that the others sounded relatively shut-in. And it is in fact the only one with sufficient amount of treble energy, the rest just don't have small enough mid-tweeter to reproduce highs. Although clarity is not up to high-end standards, the TDK outshines the rest. Bass is comparable to $100 models from competition. It can play louder due to superior efficiency.

Some caveats, though... there is a weird sense of being muffled in the lower treble; and the bass is definitely detached from the midrange and treble due to the high 250Hz crossover to the sub (which is not uncommon to multimedia speakers, btw).

I'm not saying that NXT is necessarily a great thing in audio, but in this case of the TDK Tremor S60, the implementation of the NXT technology is good enough for the specific purpose... as multimedia speakers. Of course, nobody expects miracles for fifty bucks, but sometimes there's a need even for audiophiles to go cheap....
