The performance rack consists of four threaded steal rods, six wood shelves and brass nuts and cones.

The shelves are made of birch ply with solid cherry trim. They are finished with Varathane then hand rubbed. The shelves measure 1/2" x 24"x 28" (HWD). They weigh in at about 5 lbs. per shelf. The shelves are held in place by round solid brass nuts.

Each nut has a ring that inserts into the holes in the shelf. Four nuts on top and four on bottom, with rings inserted into the shelf holes, effectively isolates the shelf from making contact with the steel rods. Energy transfer is via the brass nuts. The nuts are slightly beveled and give the feel of being spring-loaded when they are tightened. In addition to holding the shelves in place the nuts are used for tuning. More on tuning later.

The brass cones screwed onto the bottom of the steel rods mechanically ground the rack to the floor.

So how does it sound? In a word great. More air and detail. Definitely more harmonics. Instruments, especially acoustical guitars and piano just sound so real. It's hard to believe that a rack can have such an effect on the sound but believe me it does.

With the nuts loose the sound is more of a mellow airy nature. Tightening the nuts gives you a more tightly focused sound at the expense of some air. Tightening the nuts also seems to shift the pitch up a bit. I prefer the open airy sound.

I have had the rack for about two weeks and have been told that it will even sound better as the wood ages.
