I had a solid state pre-amp before purchasing the AE-3 and was just blown out of the water by the difference. Great little pre-amp that just asked to be opened up and tinkered with. You can buy it as a kit or built. It is not an easy build so shouldn't be a first project. I am extremely happy with it sonically. Very easy to tube roll due to having only two tubes. I think many people will look past this wonderful little pre just because the price is so low.
