MoFi announced this new one-step ultra-disc series earlier this year and started taking orders for the first release, Santana Abraxas, in August 2016. The Ultra-Disc is an all out assault on the art of making records. This is from the same label that brought us the UHQR LP in the early 1980s. Anyone who owns those can tell you how special they are.

The Ultra-disc one-step LP, is a 1/2 speed 45 RPM mastered LP whose production is limited to a single plating of the original lacquer and that plating is used as the stamper. Any sacrifice in sound quality by making additional platings is simply done away with.

MoFi has eliminated steps in LP production in order to make the best quality LP available. Anyone who has been in this hobby for any period of time knows the advantage of following the KISS principle and this is what MoFi has done here.

Any sound degradation sacrificed by creating multiple platings is gone and what is produced is as close to the original master tape as possible with the lowest possible noise level. From the first moments of side 1, track 1, Singing Winds, Crying Beasts, you know you are listening to something special. This is quite a LP.

The packaging of the UD1S reminds me very much of the UHQR. The LPs are in black jackets, very similar to the UHQR. A reproduction of the cover art is printed on heavy card stock, a card explaining the steps taken to produce the UD1S and a reproduction of the original LP cover is included on top of the LPs.

I can think of only one weakness in this product. Considering all the effort taken to produce the best quality LP, it really needs to be pressed on exceptional vinyl. I am not complaining about the vinyl used but it is not anything special. This caliber of product could have used something special like the original Super vinyl used on early MoFi pressings or the Clarity vinyl used by Classic Records on the red box series.

In spite of that one fault I am looking forward to more UD1S releases and I will definitely be buying each one produced. It is worth the money.

Product Weakness: Could use better vinyl
Product Strengths: Excellent quality sound
