for the Snatch 3.1

My pc rig was hidden away in a closet. In order to control Foobar, I used a Logitech bluetooth keyboard and mouse.

Some of my Foobar controls were assigned hotkeys such as z, c, v, etc.

By pressing a key, I could do such things as skip to the next track, pause, etc. This worked fine for me, but would be counter-intuitive for people not used it.

To work around this in theory, I would have to turn the projector on so people could use the mouse and see what they were doing. But I wouldn't like to run the bulb and create fan noise when just listening to music.

The other problem was application focus. Sometimes I would forget to keep Foobar in focus or another application would steal focus and render my keystrokes useless. Therefore I'd have to walk to the computer and bring Foobar to the top, and walk back again.

A supplementary tool such as the ipod touch could be useful during those times. Since I couldn't get foo_touchremote to work, I needed a wifi remote keyboard app to work around this. The Snatch program I found provided the user friendly interface needed, as well as the ability to bring applications back into focus. It worked via a Snatch server application that ran in the background (downloaded from their website), along with your wifi router.

Among the various apps out there, Snatch seemed the most configurable that had Windows support. Buttons could be created, renamed, and hotkeys assigned to them. Using its feature set, I created my own custom Foobar remote.

The Launch pad provided a real-time look at the Windows taskbar. In this photo, I had a few applications open that displayed info such as the mp3 encoding status at 72% completion. Touching any of these applications would bring them into focus, while the x provided kill process.

The Keys layout had an Edit button, which brought up three features: +, Properties, and Record.

This example was on the + screen, where I made a new button called Previous.

The Properties option allowed editing of a button's name or color.

The Record feature is where buttons are actually given their keystroke assignment. In this photo, I assigned it to the back arrow key, since that corresponded to my back arrow key in Foobar.

My completed remote.

Mouse control and left/right clicking was supported via the Tracking interface. Compared to a bluetooth mouse, the trackpad took a little more effort when using a seekbar in movies, as it was less precise.

Tweaks:

1. I prevented wifi from turning off just because the ipod screen did. In the ipod settings for the Snatch app, this is under "disconnect on lock".

2. I placed Snatch in the Startup folder so that it runs when Windows XP starts.

Conclusion:

A useful wifi remote if you happen to have an iphone/ipod touch laying around.
