for the Acoustic Wave System

A friend of mine called me up the other day and asked me to hook up a stereo system for him, seeing as I am the stereo guru (or so my friends tell me). I go over there and low and behold it was one of the Bose Acoustic Wave systems. I asked if he just bought it and why did he not take me with him to buy stereo gear and he told me that he bought about 7 or 8 years ago and never opened the box.

So I hook this system up the DVD player and away we go. We watched Transformers and Transformers 2. The sound was very mid-rangy, which greatly helped with the dialog. I could not help but notice that since the compression was set the max on the DVD player (Memorex forgot the model) when the explosions kicked in, the sound did fill the room, and it was rather boomy, a bit louder than I would have expected. This might be impressive to the casual observer, which is why this system is popular. The bass is loud, but not well defined. To my ears the sound was about the same as when just the TV speakers were playing (27 GE TV), albeit a bit louder. The Acoustic Wave System sounds as good as a 150 dollar boom box when it comes to watching action movies.

After the movies were over, we turned to Motorhead. I had to hear “Ace of Spades” on this system. Well I have to say that I was not that impressed as the sound was all mid range. The cymbals got lost in the mix and the bass was not tight. Once again it sounds like a boom box, not a $1,200 system should. We listened to some acoustic recordings a friend made, covers and a few original tunes. I have to say this is the only time the Acoustic Wave System sounded pretty good, that is to say about as good a boom box would.

I did however enjoy listening to the radio, as that works like a champ. Every station came in clear.

All in all, I think spending about $150 on a mini system would be a better investment than an Acoustic Wave System.
