I wanted a pair of headphones to replace my cheap Sony ones. I am into rock music and the Sennheiser HD 500 Fusion have very low bass response. They go down to 14hz. They sound damn good for $100 and I am very happy with them. The bass is good but not that detailed. The midrange basically gets overpowered a little from the bass. The highs are crisp and clean. I would recommend these headphones to anyone into Hip Hop and techno. They sound great with that music.

Music:
I played Beastie Boys "Check your head" through the HD 500's and the sound was really impressive. The bass lines from Adam's upright bass guitar were really cool. The music was involving, I found myself bobbing my head to Cypress Hill's "Black Sunday" and really getting into the music.

I bought these headphones after listening to my friends Hd 400 series. The only difference is that these are open air which means you need a quiet place to listen because the outside noises are easily heard because of the open air design. They are fine for me when I don't feel like firing up my Solid State integrated, good for a half-hour listening session. Don't get me wrong these headphones are comfortable and can be listened to for hours without fatigue. I will mainly use them to listen to my Panasonic portable cd player and for mastering my music project "blacklab" which is a dark ambient outfit found on mp3.com.

I can't compare headphones to a good stereo system. The sense of aliveness is not there. You know when you can hear the drums in the middle of the room, and the singer's voice in front of the drums? You really can't get that experience with these headphones. But they are good nontheless.
