Had the P-1A and the P-3 for nearly a year. Overall impression of the P-3 was favorable... there were no overt flaws which drew my attention. Was a little concerned that the dynamics seemed off... the music seemed to get denser, but not necessarily louder. This was very apparent on "live" recordings (Live Skull/Don't Get Any on You, BB KIng/Live at the Regal). There was a richness of detail present (perhaps the most overriding characteristic of Perpetual's offerings). Add the P-1A: the dynamic problem got a little worse, but the detail was excellent. Upsampling was a mixed bag. For most things it was simply amazing. Again, detail and density of information. It was very involving and intense. Textures in the high frequencies were lush, the bass had authority and was quite clear, and the mids just made me smile. The sound was very coherent and balanced. For some recordings however (Glenn Miller/The Popular Recordings, Rollins Band/Lifetime)... if there was any benefit from the upsampling, I wasn't aware of it. Granted, that is a very small percentage of my albums. At no point did I feel inclined to audition other equipment. I was quite pleased with what I was hearing. Everything had a realism, sweetness and balance which was highly addictive.
The units started producing a strange clicking sound. I arranged to have them sent back. The repairs took a little longer than I would have liked (a young company around the time of the CES... I cut them some slack), but I received two new units in a reasonable amount of time, and the problem has never reappeared.
Add speaker correction software. Remember the old adds for Maxell tape? Yeah, that good. The products will stand on their own merits with anything that I've heard previous. Add the software, and there is very little to compair (it's just a matter of tastes at that point). No longer analyzing the sound, just swept up in the emotion of the music. Nicely done.
