The addition of this DAC to my system has made as large an improvement as bi-amping . It simply took over my system and became my dominant component . I have used the DAC with the stock power supply and the Monolithic II upgrade . The Monolithic II made a 10-20% improvement over the stock model so it was marginally worth the difference in price ($300). The stock model by itself is a vast improvement to almost any single CDp(under $3000) with a digital out . Bass was enormously improved in my system , much tighter , deeper , and more coherent . This may have been due partly to some additional gain . I use a Reference Line One passive preamp . The output of the Gold Link is 4V RMS @ 0dB . The sheer musicality is simply stunning . The soundstage is both wider and deeper . Female voices , even sopranos , are lifelike . Violins have no scratchiness , just smooth piercing tones . On Diana Krall,"Peel me a Grape" you can hear the bass players fingers slide over the strings . There is almost no downside to this component except that it must be paired with good cable . It will bring out everything in both the source CD and the associated equipment . It will make an ordinary transport sound better . It will make a good transport sound incredibly good . This is one of the best upgrades I have ever made . It will put a transport such as a belt driven CEC or Parasound into the Wadia and Meridian class . The greatest downside is that I am having trouble leaving my music to go to work
