for the cd 6000 OSE

Before I begin, I want to mention that person who wrote the other review here must be confusing the CD 6000 OSE with some cd changer/recorder. While there exists a Marantz cd recorder/changer with the designation 6000 it is NOT the cd 6000 OSE, which is a dedicated cd player.
At the store, I compared the Marantz cd 6000 OSE A-B with the somewhat more expensive Rotel 971 and preferred the Marantz for it's ability to reproduce subtle spatial cues, vocals and instruments with impressive accuracy. Some drum sounds, for example were very pleasingly real. Others have there own opinion, but to me, the most "musical" hifi is that which puts the players right there in the room with me.
The Rotel was rounder sounding but seemed to paint the music with broader strokes. The effect was somewhat more of a pastiche of sounds, rather than of intimate contact with the musical performance. With the Marantz I often can clearly hear the space of the studio, and can tell if and how much reverb they used. In the case of my particular system, (which I felt needed a wake-up call) the added presence of the Marantz was welcome.
I also got a chance to A-B the Marantz with my friends Musical Fidelity (Don't remember model, but from around 1998) and the Musical Fidelity had more tiny sounds in the mix, but was a bit wispy sounding and thought the Marantz definitely had more "groove factor".
On the down side, the Marantz can sound a bit harsh and crude with poorly recorded/mixed orchestral scores and pop music, but this is quibbling.
As you may have guessed, I prefer a sound with a lot of presence and don't like "wimpy" cd players. So for my taste at the price, and for my system, I am very happy with the Marantz. I'm not going to say (like I've seen mentioned elsewhere) that people with harsh sounding systems should avoid the Marantz, because I don't think this is necessarily true.
One thing. While the Marantz works flawlessly (and may even sound better) with CDRW, it sometimes mistracks cdrs, especially when switching between tracks. If this might bother you, I suggest you take a pass on this one.

Product Weakness: Can be too revealing of poor recordings. Can get a little crude sometimes, a bit of grain compared to the best players
Product Strengths: good presentation of space, good depth and presence of instruments/vocals, excellent value for the money
