General Asylum: REVIEW: California Audio Labs Icon MKII Power Boss CD Player/Recorder by D.R. Najuch

Purchased this (2 yr. old Mint) player used for $600. I must say very nice. I had a MKII version not the HDCD Boss version around 4 years ago. I loved it, and it was one the most "toe tappin" involving CD players I came across. I was sorry I got rid of it, and at the time replaced it with separates. This one replaces a MSB link II and a EAD T1000 Transport. How does it compare to that combo? Well it is smoother less strident in the highs. It's always in the highs with CDs. Anyway, I liked the MSB but things sound so much more smoother, while still retaining the detail and slam of the MSB. Width and Depth layering is also great with this player. Increased a bit with the termination tweak on the unused digital output. Cheap and it works. I do like the remote too. This player may have a little older Digital Technology but lacks nothing in comparison to the newer Link I compared it too. As in all Audio, it is a matter of taste, system synergy, and room acoustics on how anything sounds. I do think CAL Audio makes quality audio products. These players sell very well and almost immediately on the used market and are a best bet for the cost . I did not want to purchase a DVD/CD Player Transport to go with the MSB which would also need upgrading. I was not fond of the MSB Case, of course what do you expect for $349? I was coming from an EAD DSP 7000II build quality. I have decided to wait and see what Sony was going to do with the SACD.
