These are very special amps.
When I asked George Wright to design and build these amps(now part of his line), he went right to it. The OPTs are custom designed and built by Sowter of UK. They are overspeced for 8 watts. The amps are a totally new, from the ground up.
They are so different than anything else I've heard, that I would not have beleived it if I hadn't heard them myself. These are the cleanest, clearest, smoothest amps I've ever heard. They are also the most *natural* and *relaxed* amps I've ever heard. Its hard to beleive that they only put out 1.6 watts max(1.0 nominal?)-you would never know it by listening.
Tonal balance is spot on. Treble is smooth, sweet and very extended. Midrange crystal clear. Bass is deep, tight, fast and tunefull. Timbre is perfect. The amount of harmonic information is quite impressive. The amount of information and detail suddenly revealed, is startleing. This info isn't forced on you though, its just there, like life.
There are also a few seeming contradictions. The 1.0s do PRAT extremely well, but at the same time, notes decay and linger MUCH longer than I'm used to. My foot taps much more than usual, even though the notes may seem to last longer. At first, this gave the strange sensation that the music is both fast and slow at the same time(?!). They are also hyper detailed, extremely transparent, hyper smooth and relaxed all at the same time.
As I said, these are very special amps. They aren't just another flavor, they are as close to no flavor as I've ever heard in audio. Let me repeat this-THEY GET OUT OF THE WAY OF THE MUSIC, and they do it better than anything else I've ever heard. Period. Everything else sound mechanical and synthetic. I can never go back to 2A3s now.
