In all fairness, This is a review of a modded amp. It my 1st tube amp. I looked at the 302 [too mushy and weak for me] the 502B [Great, but not quite there for what I wanted. Jolida represents nothing short of a new audio world order. It sounds even better than it's stunning gold faceted beauty looks.
As far as entry level tube amps go, the 801 is nothing short of sheer sonic bliss. This is coming from an EXCLUSIVE SS user for the past 18 years!!.
This amp took recodings I had, with the system I have and elevated them to levels far beyond affordable SS amplification. What SS lost in an electronic haze, this amp clearly picked out and presented them in a transparent, liquid fashion. Horns are no longer blatty, they are pure fanfare, and very real sounding. I recommend this amp to any SS stereo person because let's put this in easy terms: If the SS amp is on the market and Japanese since 1977, I HAVE HEARD IT. I have heard a great number of the major brands from Krell, Adcom, Acurus, Bryston, Carver, Parasound, HK, Hafler and so on. I can say this much: if the amp is SS and below $3,000, this 801 sounds MUCH better. More music, no glare and harshness. It's 70 wpc [even in triode mode] plays as loudly as any 250 wpc SS in the price range. Loud is not it: it's the was music appears in effortless control and smooth detail. I was stunned by it's quality. A HIGHLY recommended component.
