for the Dreadnaught

The Theta Intrepid is a multichannel amplifier designed for balanced zero feedback operation. The modular design is capable of a variety of configurations using up to five 200 watt (monaural) modules, ten 100 watt (five stereo) modules or in other combinations. The review unit has three 200 watt and two 100 watt modules. A single power supply is used for all channels and channels can be designated as "stereo" or primary channels and "surround" or secondary channels. Two front panel switches activate the amplifier from standby and choose all channel or "stereo" operation. A rear panel switch defeats all power to the unit. All of the technical specifications and the manual are available on the Theta Digital website.

The Theta Dreadnaught is a large and imposing amplifier and generates a fair amount of heat. In standby, the output bias is reduced, but the amplifier still consumes some power and remains slightly warm to the touch. There is no significant change in sound as it operates, so the standby mode seems to work well. The transformer produces no buzz and the operation of the amplifier is quiet and assuring. Build quality is excellent. The sculpted front panel is graceful and lends the Dreadnaught a refined appearance likely to fit into any decor.

Sound should be the strongest selling point for any amplifier, and the Dreadnaught delivers it quite well. The noise floor is very low and the amplifier overloads gracefully. Power output from the 200 watt modules is prodigious, and the 100 watt modules provide the same liquid midrange and smooth presentation with only slightly less impact. Bass is full and tight when the speakers are run full range. No bloat and no boom here. It compares well to the Innersound ESL-300 and is more refined than the Outlaw 750 that it replaced in my home theater. The Theta is expensive, but it produces superb sound for music or home theater. Highly recommended.

Product Weakness: Expensive. Large and heavy.
Product Strengths: Smooth clean presentation with a great midrange. Very quiet.
