Quick comparison this afternoon on my travel rig:
iTunes 10.1.2 on a MacBookPro with AIFF files.
CEentrance DACPort via USB to AudioTechnica ESW 10 JPN
I compared several songs A/B, which was easy. I maxed all software volume and kept the same volume on the DACPort (not perfect, but I said quick)
I found the same songs via Fidelio were much better than straight iTunes. I was listening to bluegrass mainly. The Fidelio produced tones that truely came right off the instrument strings, greatly more so than iTunes. I did run one 24/88 file through: Beekman's Toccata. Again you could see the organ pipes, and the notes were just better shaped.
Of course I still need to compare to PureMusic on one of my main setups before I will commit.
Thanks for bringing the link here, was a fun exercise, and I was pleasantly surprised at how much difference there was.
