edit and doh
Not bit pefect ... sorry. Listen to Peter's explanation as to why it's right though. Sorry for the poor title that can't be changed.

"Hi Dave,

No. "Losless" (which btw is your expression, not mine) is about the ability to revert to the original. Think like this :

4/2 = 2 -> 2*2 = 4 <- losless.
4/3 = 1.3333333 -> 3*1.3333333 <> 4 <- lossy.

Look at the volume like 4 (max volume) / 2 (half the power of the volume).

The digital volume in XX only uses divisions which are losless.
What is the importance of this ?
Losless by itself does nothing (but describes the proces). It is about 4/3 not resulting in an even result with 6/3. So if two amplitudes occur, both should have the same relation to eachother at any volume. Thus :

9/3 and 6/3 result in values with the same relation (9:6 = 3:2)
9/3 and 4/3 do not result in the same relation (9:4 <> 3:1.33333)

Now, have a drink on me ! hehe

Peter (XXHighEnd) has finally worked out the math to get a "lossless" volume in finer gradations...
"...The granularity now is 1.5dB, or better, is "near" 1.5dB. This means that from one step to the other it may go like -1.2dB, -1.6dB, -1.55dB etc., ..."
I can now use it exclusively to control my volume, (instead of changing 4 !! volume controls on my Pass Labs xover), and retain "lossless" playback! yeehaw ... Can any other player claim this? I knew there was a reason I held off getting a preamp.

edit
also curious,,, he's added a check-box to have XXHE first copy files to the drive that the OS/XXHE is on and then load the files into memory from there ... hmm voodoo for the SSD (oh well, practical for keeping your external drive from spinning up every 3 mins ... but some of us might say loading from the SSD is a good thing eh?).
