Hi-end phono cartridges

received an acoustic sounds catalog in the mail recently.
while thumbing thru it, i was struck by how many very expensive
phono cartridges there are on the market.

have only recently begun to listen to vinyl again and had bought
a denon 160 cartridge for an old table--after havng read pro and
cons on these boards.

what i am struck by is that very few posts allude to these hi-end
(expensive) cartridges in use by inmates here. even those who seem
to have tested several over the years.sometimes i get the impression
that those experiences were while buying,selling,setting-up tables &
cartridges for others. but even then, the predominant references are
to a rather small number of brands and models, mostly relatively cheap

is it only reviewers that actually have the opportunity to sample
any or some of these cartridges? i doubt whether i will ever find
such a set-up to listen to.the highest end set-up i have heard was
a Linn LP12-ekos-klyde some years ago.while it was good, it was not that much better than the current Linn CD player, probably what got
me going on the long journey in search of good CD sound.

now again morbidly curious. is there that much difference in the
higher priced cartridges?
