Cleaning LP12 Platter..anyone?

Hello,

After refurbishing a old Connoisseur BD103 and polishing the outside of the plater with steel wool, I wondered if I might do the same with my LP 12. I've been leery of this for fear of affecting the balance of the platter.

If anyone has succesfully polished an LP12 platter with no negative sonic affects, I would love to hear how you did it.
