Paging Interstage Tranny . . .

While looking for LPs at a Seattle area Goodwill, my wife found a beautiful mahogany, Capehart, Chippendale, 21P4 console with a Voice of Music 956B record changer. For a steep $150, we ended up dragging the unit home for a future restoration job.

Actually the outside looks wonderful, but I will need to work on the 6V6 output tube receiver and clean and lube the V-M changer. The original owner left the circular, paper, instruction sheet on the platter, so the velvet platter looks fantastic. The only problem is that the original owner removed the GE VR cartridge and substituted a flip over cartridge of some sort. I will not see the unit again for 3 1/2 months, as we are now back in Alaska shoveling snow.

Anyway, I have purchased I believe a GE RPX 050 cartridge off eBay, and I wanted to see if you could confirm the cartridge model for me. The cartridge seller actually advertised the unit as a Shure RPX cartridge, even though the GE logo was painted right on the cartridge body. I guess Shure is like the word Kleenex when referring to any tissue product. Another problem I might face is finding cartridge clips for the GE cart, if the clips were discarded while installing the non-original cartridge. As usual, GE warns against soldering cartridge wires directly to the cartridge pins. The GE cartridge measures approximately 430 ohms, so no coil damage has occurred.

The pictures of my cartridge indicate that the 78 spherical stylus is fine, but the 33/45 needle is awful. However, I did notice that the rubber snubber on the 78 stylus has a big gap between it and the stylus arm. The pictures that I have seen on the net for other RPX clip-in styli show the rubber bumper contacting the stylus arm. I will be looking for 1 mil and 3 mil diamond styli for my cartridge, unless you have a better suggestion for me.

Thanks in advance, Bill.
