RE: Misnomer

I would suspect we are working on related issues here. Seems to me that a lot (not all!) of "burning in" or "breaking in" is the simple realignment of the magnetic constituents in the adjacent circuitry or the circuitry itself.

Demagnetizing apparently restores the the circuit parameters to their original amorphous state. You can try this simple experiment, without the use of any device to change the magnetic orientation,

Take a speaker wire or interconnect and reverse the direction and play something. It will sound brighter than it did before. Play it for 15 minutes or so, then reverse it again. Again you will notice that the original position has increased top end. Repeating the process will yield an improvement in the top end each time as well as increased dynamics. Doing this about a half a dozen times will yield a fairly stable configuration and will be stable for about a month. You are essentially using the current in the cable to realign the molecular structure in the wire and insulation.

If you have a tape degausser as I do, you can simply run the degausser along the length of your speaker cable. I use a Geneva brand 2800 gauss hand held model. This way is even less prone to error as you can do this without even breaking the existing connections or position of the wire. You will get a phenomenally open quality of sound with a wider soundstage and better detail for about 3 to 5 minutes. I can hear the effect deteriorating as I play a song, but it reveals that the degaussing does have something to do with sonics. This effect is duplicated to a certain degree, or even improved upon when using a Gryphon Exorcist, or PAD disc. Most other burn in discs, do not have the same effect, at least not in my experience.
