Varieties of OB2 voltage stabilizer tube

As I wrote before, I am looking for a replacement for my broken WY2 voltage stabilizer tube. I found some 50's vintage Raytheon OB2 tubes locally, but they are quite expensive.

I also contacted with Tube World and he offered several pair, but, according to his web site, some of them use argon gas and others (later ones) use neon gas. I asked the seller and he wrote: "Before 1970 most argon purple pink color gas, after 1970 all neon red.

If your Chinese tubes lit up red they used neon gas."

As my tube is fried, I cannot say whether it lit up red (perhaps, yes).Is it critical whether I buy a tube using argon or neon gas? May I destroy the player if I use a wrong tube?

So far, I asked a friend to loan me a Mazda OB2 tube with a pink base (whether argon or neon), so that I can check it with my CDP.
