Maybe small stand mounted speakers would be more appropriate to your needs. I've found that subwoofer/satellite systems can provide excellent full range sound. A floor-standing speaker might still require a subwoofer for deep bass when moved away from walls and out into the room. I graduated from my subwoofer/satellite system to floor-standing speakers a few years ago, but I found I still needed my subwoofer for the bottom octave.
You can buy a good subwoofer for $1000 or less and a good pair of stand mounted two-way speakers can be had of $2000 or less. In fact, another way to go would be with active monitors and a subwoofer. Dynaudio makes some excellent sounding active monitors for around $1700.
If you still want to go with a floor-standing system, check out GoldenEar Technology. I have a friend with a pair of Triton 7's and they sound very good. He is a vinyl enthusiast, too. The larger Triton's have a built-in amplifier for their subwoofer section.
Good luck,
John Elison
