There is so much distortion going on everywhere that I actually hear things differently than you do! In my system vinyl records always sound smoother and rounder than their CD equivalents. But then again I am using hardware in the vinyl playback chain that is for the most part known to be a little on the mellow-sounding side (Sota TT, tubes, Epos speakers). Even so, I also wonder if there might be something about the characteristic sound of the vinyl format that can mask over potential harshness in other parts of the electronics chain. I think I like the slight "sense of motion" that is audible on a vinyl setup. To me that adds a bit of quivering life to the sound.
