You might want to see if you local library has the Ken Burns jazz series on VCR. It certainly has flaws, but it will give you a broad idea of what the various styles are. If your library has CDs, they can help you explore the various styles and start making decisions about what you prefer and what you might want to purchase for yourself.There is so much saxophone music out there, but you might want to check out
The Brothers - Getz, Sims, etalZoot Sims is a personal favorite of mine, especially when teamed with Al Cohn.
If you like these, you can check out one of their influences Lester Young (one of the jazz greats). Get some Coleman Hawkins while you are at it and compare.
From there you can explore more.... Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, ... The list is long (and this is just sax, there are also trumpet, piano, clarinet, guitar, vibraphone, ....)
