I just popped in a pair of unshielded Silver Audio Hyacinth interconnects and am now picking up noise from dimmers and such in my house that were only a very minor problem before. The previous interconnect was an MIT 330+ S/II; I think it's shielded but am not certain. My assumption is they are doing something in the terminator boxes that reduces this type of noise. Also, the amp "pops" through the speakers when I flip the power switch to it (before shutting off the preamp). Now that IS scary...but I don't think it's enough to damage the speakers. When my digital preamp is turned off, the amp buzzes VERY loud, otherwise, when on, you have to put your ear right up to it to hear a faint hum.
Two questions: First, why is it that when the preamp is off, does the amp cause such loud buzzing through the speakers (not loud loud, just medium loud)? Is it just because the circuit is open and the ground path is not complete (i.e., the I/C is acting like an antenna)? Would having the new I/C shielded help?
Second, can Quiet Line A/C filters do anything to suppress dimmer noise?
Thanks to anyone that can shed light on this!
