preamp advice needed

Hello,
over the holidays a friend of mine lent me his new spectral DMC 30S preamp. It is an absolutely outstanding sounding unit. Unfortunately I can not afford this preamp. But now I feel the need to get a new one which can be compared in soundquality to the spectral. I also like diy.
can anyone give me advice which preamp could be the right one for me?
Oh, I forgot to tell you about my system. The speakers from 180Hz upwards are spherical horns driven by a tube amp using 211 (VT-4-C). The subwoofer are conventional (but using lots of drivers to match the spl of the horns) and are driven by a big and fast transistor amp.
I mainly listen to vinyl.
