Nec 602 which one?

Does anybody know the difference between the Nec 602 6xe and the Nec 602 6x? Is one more desirable? The 6xe is the cd-rom mentioned in the Positve Feedback DIY article by Ed Morawski. The 6x looks similar and appears to be of the same vintage.
