Shileding is not always a necessity, but it often pays ton have it, as many do not recgonize the problems that RFI can bring to a system, and suddenly, one is fighting ghosts instead of enjoying music.

Yes, shorter is not as bad, and further down the chain is not as bad, but keep in mind their may be subtle problems that come and go due to RFI, and unshielded cables tend to allow this.

Braiding or twisting will help a lot, as will any electrically balanced cable geometry.

I would recommend using a shield, but being sure to space it away from the conductors as much as possible, using quality insulation materials, and an oversized shield braid that will fit over the spacing material, perhaps in conjunction with teflon plumbers tape wrap both onthe insed and outside.

Remember, try to keep any relative motion between conductors to a minimum, vibration control can be an issue with DIY interconnects that do not address it.
